Exciting food and presentation

Having watched chef Dean on Masterchef Professional a couple of years ago, we were keen to try out Haar as we live in the local area. My forthcoming 66th birthday seemed like a good excuse so I booked the five course tasting menu at Haar via an Itison voucher, which seemed really good value. Unfortunately, before we could take up the booking, Fife was moved into Tier 3 Covid restrictions, which of course meant alcohol couldn't be sold. We couldn't have that, so phoned up and fortunately they allowed me to shift my booking to the final evening before the new restrictions came in, which meant we could still accompany our meal with wine, albeit we had to book for 5.30 in order have it before the 8pm curfew under the previous restrictions.

So, off we went (using our buspasses!) and got to Haar about 5.15. There was a nice polite welcome from the staff and we were shown to our table. It felt a little odd that no one offered to take our coats but we assumed it was a Covid issue - there were coat hanging facilities at the entrance but we hadn't noticed them. It would be good if reception staff could mention this. Anyway, it was not a big deal as we could just hang them on the back of the chairs.

Decor in the restaurant was fairly understated - I had expected it to be a bit more modern but the options were probably restricted by the traditional design of the room. The atmosphere was a little subdued but this was probably because of the early hour and of course a good atmosphere is enjoyable but can sometimes make it almost impossible to have a conversation, so this was fine.

The serving staff were very polite and helpful, attentive without being overly so, and knowledgeable about the food and wine.

We opted for the five course menu - two other courses were available at extra cost, and tempting though they sounded, we didn't want to overdo it. We did, however, splash out on the "premier" wine flight.

And so to the food. I'd have to say it was all excellent, well chosen, skillfully prepared with great contrasts of taste between different element of dishes and between courses. The presentations were stunning with some lovely witty ideas like "carrot tails". The freshly baked bread was also fantastic. The staff stressed the "fusion" nature of the menu and it was great to try something a little bit different from the classical fine dining dishes. For us, however, in some plates the saltiness and spicing was maybe just a little too much and tended to dominate over the flavour of the excellent produce used. We would probably lean more towards the classical tastes. However, that is just personal taste and there will be loads of (possibly younger) people who will absolutely love these combinations. And as I say, it was good to be taken a little out of your comfort zone and try something different and I am really glad to have done so. I liked all the courses but especially the beef tartare and the deconstructed banoffee, which was one of the best and most interesting desserts I've ever had.

The accompanying wines were all excellent, carefully chosen to partner the dishes to great effect.

Overall, a really good experience and very enjoyable. Haar is a great addition to St Andrews' already good food offering (For those who don't know St Andrews probably has the best standard and range of restaurants of any town of its size in Scotland). OK it's not cheap but for the quality of food and the skill of preparation the prices are not unreasonable and if you can get the Itison offer it is an absolute bargain. I'd certainly not hesitate to go back again, thank you.”

Delicious lunchtime tasting menu

Girlfriend and I visited for an anniversary lunch. Much anticipated and we were jot disappointed. Every course of the tasting menu offered something a little big different.

Highlight for me was the supplementary smoked lobster course.

Friendly, understated service too.

No alcohol served at present but, if anything, this meant we could really focus on enjoy every bite of food.

Thank you, we'll be back in better times.”
