Four reasons to visit St. Andrews (that isn't for the golf)
Things to do in St. Andrews
It is no secret that we love St. Andrews. It is our forever home after all. A beautiful seaside town that is host to many beautiful landmarks both old and new. Steeped in history and, of course, it is the Home of Golf too – but that’s not why we’re here today.
Our beautiful town plays host to many other things to do if you’re not into golf. It is a place steeped in culture and you will not run out of things to do here on a long weekend, trust us.
1) West Sands Beach
First on the list when visiting St. Andrews would absolutely be a walk along West Sands Beach. Enjoy long stretches of sandy beaches that would put Malibu or Santa Monica to shame. Only fifteen minutes from the town centre, this beach is perfect for a romantic walk when visiting with your significant other. This beautiful beach allows for stunning panoramic views of St. Andrews, and you can spot all our stunning landmarks from there. It is ideal for a visit with family, taking in the fresh sea air with the little ones in tow. It is also a great spot to take your furry little friends if you have any dogs with you.
Fun fact: West Sands Beach was featured in the opening scenes of blockbuster Chariots of Fire. Try and recreate the iconic scene with your family. “Alexa, play Chariots of Fire by Vangelis.”
2) St. Andrews Cathedral
The iconic cathedral that can be seen in the St. Andrews skyline. You can explore the ruins of Scotland’s biggest and most iconic medieval church. Even in its ruinous state, this landmark still is a prominent part of St. Andrews history.
The cathedral was built in 1158 and to this date is the largest church to ever be built in Scotland, serving as the headquarters of the medieval Scottish church. It fell into disuse in the 16th century after Catholic mass was outlawed during that time.
Please note: at present, the St. Rules tower is closed, but you can still visit parts of the grounds, the museum and the gift shop.
Tickets for admission can be purchased here and pre-booking is advised to ensure entry on your selected date and time.
3) St. Andrews Museum
Keeping in with the historic, cultured theme. No trip to St. Andrews would be complete without a visit to the St. Andrews Museum.
Situated inside an old Victorian mansion. This stunning building hosts a number of exhibitions both old and new. It explores everything from St. Andrews’ medieval past, right through to present day. It contains lots of different artefacts and specimens and is an ideal day out with the family.
Admission is free and there is plenty of parking on-site and even a café to enjoy a bite to eat and a refreshing drink after a long day of taking in all the amazing culture.
4) Visit Haar Restaurant with Rooms
You couldn’t visit St. Andrews without heading to its newest contemporary dining spot. Brought to you by MasterChef: The Professionals finalist Chef Dean Banks. Enjoy an unbelievable, relaxed culinary experience steeped in storytelling. You can expect to enjoy some local delicacies such as Dean’s signature dish of oak-smoked lobster with a mirin butter sauce or some Loch Etive trout and crab in a galangal curry sauce.
Fun fact: all of our lobsters are caught metres from Haar in St. Andrews Bay.
At Haar, we believe that dining out should be an engaging time from start to finish. That is why from the minute you walk in the door, you are brought into an immersive experience like no other restaurant. You will first join us at the Chef’s Bar, where our team will wow you with tales of all things Haar, while preparing your pre dinner snacks – expect delicacies like local oysters and Cullen Skink tarts. You will enjoy your snacks while sipping on a pre-dinner glass of Champage, or even a cocktail.
After your Chef’s Bar experience is over, you will be taking to our dining area where the team will amaze you with all of our local, seasonal dishes. We recommend trying the scallops and the signature lobster. Two absolute showstoppers of the menu.
